It was just one sentence. Just a few words strung together.
Mathew Shepard was a meth addict.
Oh initially the implications of this start to roll in. What could this mean? So we started to do some research. And apparently this revelation comes from the printing of a new book. So now we have a context to this statement. The book in a nut she’ll seems to be pointing to the fact that the story of Matthew Shepard has been exploited for political gain. That what really was going on at the time was gay on gay violence over a dispute about meth. The guy that issued the fatal blow was known at the time to be high and be in the middle of a week long meth binge. And He had been on the hunt most of that day to find new supplies. And Matthew Shepard was known to carry and do some small time dealing. The killers actual defense argument at the time was a defense that is known at gay panic. Gay Panic has been known to be successful in previous trials. It is the argument that a person is so traumatized by the act of a gay person flirting with them that they snap and inflict harm upon the gay person. They cannot be helped and the initiation of that act of violence could not be avoided. Its was a marginal defense, but it probably has a better success rate than pleading he was high on meth. There was even testimony from his girl friend stating that he wanted to teach Matthew Shepard lesson for flirting with him. The twist was that it was somewhat known that he and Matthew Shepard were seen together in gay clubs. So now the story is really that it was a common violent crime that happened to involve gay guys. But that one of the guys was so afraid to be labeled gay that he changed the slant of the argument. And the political forces ran with it. They let him claim it was a hate crime to, in the end, chastise him for committing a hate crime and passing legislation against hate crime. This is not an argument to allow hate crime. Here today we are discussing is the exploitation of the situation to change public opinion. Just because the end product here is a more free and open society it doesn’t negate the fact that many details were originally omitted and the story was used for an agenda. Never mind the martyrdom of a meth head in Wyoming. It is the exploitation of that violent act. As a matter of fact we can disassociate completely from this crime and just talk generally about persuasive arguments in speeches. Is this just how it’s done. Do I really have to be this cynical regarding all policies, governmental, religious, corporate, or otherwise. While others are busy arguing about bigotry or violence or gay rights, I am standing here warning of political exploitation. Its not so much that they exploit my emotions, although that is disturbing, but that they are exploiting horrible acts like beating a human and leaving them for dead. What kind of disturbed soul can look at that situation and sling a campaign around it? Just those six words
Matthew Shepard was a meth addict
Were the biggest mind blown statement I had witnessed in months. Nice.
