“If Tetris has taught me anything it’s that errors pile up and accomplishments disappear.”
Battery Pratt was built around the turn of the century and put into service in June of 1900. It is just one of the many gun batteries that was built near Astoria as part of Fort Stevens. Fort Stevens, itself was one of three gun placement forts built to defend the entrance to the Columbia River.
This bolt was used to keep tracks secure that were part of the shell lift from the storage room located below the gun placement. The guns at Battery Pratt were some of the smallest at the fort and fired shells only 6 inches in diameter.
The guy that made this bolt and the guy that placed this bolt was probably born just after the Civil War. In this picture alone we have probably already given this bolt more scrutiny than either of those two individuals ever did. We took a photo with a magical filmless image capturing device, placed the ephemeral image on a quad core adding machine and transmitted it around the world instantly. Trying to connect our world to theirs seems like an impossible task. This bolt is one of the few tangible ways we can.
In the previously classified video below, a little after 2 minutes, is footage of the rifles being fired at Fort Stevens. The guns shown are the larger 10 inch variety.
